Why gas prices are high in the US - and what you can do about it - comment from the Center For Individual Freedom

Senators Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and other politicians in Washington are to blame for high prices at the gas pump! Yet as public anger increases, our politicians in Washington, in typical fashion, are looking to place blame elsewhere. They want to pass tax increases that will raise prices at the pump. They are trying to divert our attention away from them by offering measly $100 rebates. They want to blame anyone and anything but themselves for rising gas prices. Why are prices at the pump really rising beyond three dollars per gallon? Simply put: The price of gasoline is high because domestic production is dangerously low and America's dependence on Middle Eastern oil and other imports is dangerously high. The price of gasoline is high because unnecessary regulations have halted the building of new domestic refineries for more than 30 years. The price of gasoline is high because the U.S. economy, which is dependent on oil, is thriving. Demand for oil is high, while supply is low. The price of gasoline is high because politicians like Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer -- and all the other liberals in Congress -- for the past two decades, have continually voted AGAINST increasing production of domestic oil. It's time to force our political leaders to do something they've refused to do for over a generation. It's time to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to environmentally safe exploration and allow the building of more refineries. Let's face facts, political pandering, increasing taxes or $100 government give-aways WILL NOT increase our oil supply. Congress got us into this mess and if we don't take a stand TODAY -- Congress will simply continue the pandering and the failed policies and prices at the pump will continue to go up and up and up... We Need Real Solutions What's the real problem? Liberals are the problem. Liberals -- at the behest of environmentalists and 'Greenies' -- have prohibited the building of oil refineries in this country for more than 30 years. Moreover, liberals have continually blocked drilling on a tiny parcel of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) because they claim it might offend the delicate sensibilities of polar bears and caribou. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that tapping ANWR could increase America's domestic oil production by as much as 50 percent per year -- enough to drive the price of oil way, way down; and experts agree that this could be done without the slightest damage to even the most paranoid polar bear or neurotic caribou. You feel the disastrous consequences of leftist obstructionism every time you pump gas! That's why Congress must pass legislation to open up ANWR to U.S. production of more oil. But, ANWR isn't the only oil reserve Teddy, Hillary, Chuck and the rest of the mouth-frothing "Greenies" have declared off-limits to exploration by American companies. The federal government also has jurisdiction over the Outer Continental Shelf -- some 190-200 nautical miles of gulf and ocean floor beyond where state jurisdiction ends. Some experts estimate that more oil lies under our Outer Continental Shelf than in all of Saudi Arabia. Environmentalists have wrung their hands and shrieked at the very idea -- claiming high winds and rough waters would tear the off-shore rigs apart and kill every creepy-crawly in the ocean. But truth be told, technological advances have far outpaced their tired rhetoric. Congress needs to get serious about this problem, and that means WE must get serious and hold their feet to the fire. ANWR's Potential... America's energy consumption has grown at twice the rate of domestic production since the energy crisis in the 1970s. Yet more than half of our nation's oil is currently imported from foreign sources, including nations and regions plagued by instability and turmoil -- like Venezuela and the Middle East. In fact, U.S. imports have risen to between 58%-64% of all oil consumed in this country, depending on the time of year. And, as America's oil consumption increases by more than two percent each year, thanks to a growing economy, without more domestic production, imports will continue to skyrocket. While conservation and other alternative sources of energy need to be explored, the fact remains that our economy -- our way of life -- is dependent on affordable sources of oil. ANWR represents our nation's best hope to reduce energy prices, boost the economy and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. Or to put it another way, ANWR would... Replace the one million barrels of oil PER DAY we lost because of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Replace over 30 years of Saudi oil and 58 years of Iraqi oil and take a big bite out of the $150 billion -- that's $150,000,000,000 -- the United States spends each and every year importing foreign oil. Create over 736,000 new jobs -- that's nearly three quarters of a million -- in the United States. Raise over $29 billion in federal tax revenues -- that's $29,000,000,000 -- and over $31 billion in state tax revenues over a 15 year period -- without raising taxes. Liberals Are Weeping Crocodile Tears When liberals weep buckets of tears over the high price of gasoline, don't be conned into believing they really feel your pain. They are insanely, passionately in love with high gasoline prices. "Greenie" websites feature articles with titles like: 'More Taxes Please: Why the Price of Gas Is Too Low.' As columnist Ann Coulter put it: 'For decades Democrats have been trying to raise the price of gasoline so that the working class will stop their infernal car driving and start riding on buses where they belong...' The Wall Street Journal made the same point: 'High [gas] prices have been the prod that the left has favored to persuade Americans to abandon their SUVs and minivans, use mass transit, turn the thermostat down, produce less consumer goods and services, and stop emitting those satanic greenhouse gases.' Sam Kazman -- an expert on gasoline pricing at the Competitive Enterprise Institute -- said: 'Why isn't the left dancing in the streets over $3 a gallon gas?' Actually they're dancing behind closed doors with the shades drawn, because they don't want you and the rest of the American people to know how absolutely ecstatic they are. For years they've been trying to drive up the price of gas by increasing taxes at the pump: In 1993 -- when the Democrats controlled the House, Senate, and White House -- then-President Clinton proposed a 26-cent tax on gas. When Republicans demanded that the tax be dropped, Big Bad Wolf Al Gore huffed and puffed and said the gas tax was 'absolutely not coming out' of the energy bill. Then-Speaker of the House Tom Foley said: "I'd have a five-cent increase every year for five years." Not to be outdone, John Kerry (Remember him?) called for a 50-cent gas tax. Conservatives in Congress fought so hard to keep gasoline prices down that the Dems were only able to sneak through a 4.3 percent federal tax. Now Schumer is prancing around in mock pain like he just stubbed his toe: 'If $75 a barrel and a $3 average for a gallon of gas isn't a wake-up call," he said, "then what is?' He's right! It IS a wake-up call -- for conservative Americans -- for you and me -- to speak with one voice to Congress, to tell them, 'You've gotten us into this mess. Now get us out!' Didn't ANWR Pass? But wait a minute! Didn't Congress pass a bill a while back that would have opened up oil production in ANWR? They sure did -- in 1995. And Bill Clinton vetoed it. You know the reason he gave? He said -- if you have high blood pressure skip this sentence -- it would take 5-10 years to produce the oil. Let's see. That means oil would have been pouring out of wells by no later than last year. And we wouldn't be paying $3 a gallon for gasoline today. Are we going to postpone the tapping of these oil-rich reserves in ANWR and the Outer Continental Shelf just to appease the Chicken Little Environmental Lobby on Capitol Hill? The Republican-controlled Congress has the power to say "No!" But you and I must hold their feet to the fire.
